Sleeping Soundly: Tips for Laying and Getting Out of Bed While Pregnant

Finding a comfortable position in bed can be a struggle, and getting out of bed gracefully can feel downright impossible. In this article, we’ll share some tips for laying in bed and getting out of bed while pregnant that can help you get the rest you need.

Laying in Bed

 Many medical professionals advise pregnant women to sleep on their left side. This is due to the findings from several studies, which have associated back and right-side sleeping with a higher risk of stillbirth, reduced fetal growth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia—a potentially fatal high blood pressure disorder that affects the mother. Furthermore, this position can also help improve circulation for both the baby and mother as well as reduce acid reflux during pregnancy.

Use Pillows: If you’re a stomach or back sleeper, you’ll need to train yourself to sleep on your side during pregnancy. Place a pillow between your legs for support, and use another one to prop up your belly and take the pressure off your back. Experiment with different pillow shapes and sizes to find what works best for you.

Try a Body Pillow: Some pregnant women swear by body pillows, which are designed to wrap around your entire body and provide support where you need it. They can take up a lot of space in bed, but if you’re struggling to get comfortable, it might be worth the investment.

Use Your Legs: When standing up, use your legs rather than your abs. Sit on the edge of the bed with your feet flat on the floor, then push yourself up with your legs while keeping your back straight.

Ask for Help: Don’t be afraid to ask your partner or a family member for help getting in and out of bed, especially if you’re experiencing pain or discomfort.
